As Joan Laporta’s term
at the presidency of FC Barcelona reaches its end and his political profile gains more and more momentum the media campaign against him has also increased its intensity. The virulence with which many radio and TV programs treat Joan Laporta is notorious but it’s understandable: the fact that it has been an openly pro-independence-of-Catalonia president who has given the club its wider international recognition and the most brilliant and successful era of its history is something difficult to swallow for many. It’s itchy and so they scratch.
The campaing to discredit Joan Laporta will increase as he approaches his highly predictable jump to politics , which could take placte next summer after stepping down from FC Barcelona presidency at the end of this season. His potential power as a political leader is undeniable, and the fact that the powers-that-be are so anxious about Laporta is indicative of their concern about Laporta’s potential to upset the status quo.
It is still unknown how and when Laporta will move to politics, and before he does so, I can only hope he will complete just another successful season at the front of “the unarmed army of Catalonia” -quoting Manuel Vazquez Montalban description of FC Barcelona- and that he will manage to get through it without losing his credibility, his reputation and his integrity as the best president the club has ever had.
