About the corruption scandals in Catalonia

Catalan politics, which had historically been known as an “oasis” has become been seriously turmoiled by a series of important corruption scandals. First it was the Millet case , with millions of public money ending up in the pockets of the administrator of the Palau de la Música, one of the most popular and respected institutions of the Catalan culture. But when the first scandal seemed to be settling down, a bigger one blow up in the media. Called as “Pretoria” case , it involves the mayor (from the socialist party) of one of the biggest cities in Catalonia (Santa Coloma de Gramenet) and two members of former Catalan President Jordi Pujol’s government, along with other people with less relevant responsibilities.

Both cases are to be taken really seriously, but we must not collaborate with those who seek to spread populist propaganda against each and every politician in this country. It is in times like these ones, that we have to demonstrate what kind of democracy we have.  Politicians are not all the same, nor politics as such are intrinsically evil. We, as society, must live up to the requirements of democracy and act as a true accounting power of our politicians, and must try our best to demand better politics through better politicians. And, above all, we should try to avoid the easiest way out of these situations: blame them all for everything we dislike as if we had never voted them.
