Catalonia is a nation situated at the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. It spreads over current Spanish and French borders and administrative divisions, configuring what is known as the Catalan Countries (Països Catalans). The term Països Catalans refers to all the territories where Catalan language is spoken, though it does not have any legal entity of its own. Using the Spanish and French legal and administrative divisions, the Catalan Countries are composed by the following territories:
- The Spanish autonomous communities of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the País Valencià
- Andorra
- Most of the French department of the Pyrénées-Orientales, also called le Pays Catalan (Catalan Country) in French or Catalunya (del) Nord (Northern Catalonia) in Catalan;
- The Italian city of Alghero, in the island of Sardinia, where a variant of Catalan is spoken.
